1953 National Model 1170 Club Combo – Sunburst
A standout from National's early electric era, this 1953 Club Combo model showcases the distinctive flair and craftsmanship that defined their postwar electric archtops. Built in Chicago, it features a full 17" non-cutaway hollow body with a laminated maple back and sides paired with a carved spruce top, all dressed in a warm sunburst lacquer finish.
The fully hollow construction is accented by triple binding on the body and f-holes, giving it a refined, upscale look. Its signature “Stylist” neck is constructed from mahogany with a bound rosewood fingerboard and block inlays, offering smooth playability. The neck angle is adjustable via a screw at the heel—a clever design touch from this era that makes setup easy and eliminates the need for a neck reset.
Electronics include two uniquely voiced National pickups, mounted in the company’s trademark floating configuration, which provides a bright, chimey tone with just the right amount of vintage grit. The headstock sports a raised National logo over a plastic overlay and is fitted with vintage Kluson-style tuners.
This particular example is in excellent condition with minor finish checking and flaking visible in photos—typical aging for a nearly 75-year-old guitar. The original electronics and hardware are all intact and functioning well. Included is a very nice era-correct hardshell case (an upgrade from the standard chipboard cases of the time), The case is a bit musty as one would expect from a guitar and case of this age.
A rare and funky gem from National’s golden age—vintage tone, eye-catching style, and great playability in one package.
